About the Resort
The skiing in this resort, while not considered the best for beginners, offers competent skiers a huge range of choice and the pistes (155km) go very high indeed with the top piste starting at 3842m (at Aiguelle du Midi) near the towering monster that is Mont Blanc (4807m!) going all the way down to 1035m where the resort is.
There are 75 runs with snowmaking covering about 6% of the pistes, lower down. The longest run is 19km offering you a huge distance to cover without ever even having to change course! There is an abundant supply of cross country trails also (42km). The resort is generally considered to offer a great Apres Ski scene also and is good for non skiing members of any group with the range of activities on offer.
"Chamonix is situated in the north-westerly part of the Alps, just 15 km from the Swiss border via the Col des Montets and 15 km from Italy via the Mont-Blanc tunnel. The border of these three countries unites at 3820 meters on the summit Mont Dolent.
Chamonix and its valley are dominated by the Mont Blanc chain to the south and the Aiguilles Rouges (red peaks) to the north. The town centre is situated at an altitude of 1035 meters and the top of the valley lies the village of Le Tour (1462 meters)." - Chamonix Website
There are a number of bars and restaurants to chill out in after a hard day's skiing; the relaxation options are wide and varied. The "Jekyll and Hide" is worth checking out as one of these options! The smaller village of Argenti?re is included in the Chamonix round up of accommodation as it is not that far from Chamonix and a bus service operates daily.
